TV Viewing Distance and Room Size Guide
Measure from your eyes to the screen, not from one wall to another. Room area alone cannot tell you the right TV size: furniture layout, picture detail, and how much of your view you want the screen to fill all matter.
How far should you sit from a TV?
The table below compares two screen angles, not minimum room dimensions. A 40° horizontal angle gives a larger, more immersive picture; 30° leaves more of the room in view. Try both positions before choosing. These are geometric reference points, not a safety rule or a guarantee of comfort.

Calculation: distance = screen width ÷ (2 × tan(viewing angle ÷ 2)). The distances describe screen coverage regardless of resolution.
1080p, 4K, or 8K: does resolution change the distance?
Resolution affects how much detail you can distinguish close up; it does not change the screen's physical size. Sony gives a minimum reference of 1.5 times screen height for 4K and 3 times screen height for HD. These close-viewing references serve a different purpose from choosing a comfortable field of view.
A 4K panel is useful when your content and viewing position let you see its extra detail. A 1080p source does not become native 4K when upscaled. Likewise, an 8K label alone is not a reason to move your sofa closer or buy a larger screen.

What size TV suits a bedroom or small room?
Measure from your usual position on the bed or chair. Compare that distance with the table, then check screen width against the available wall or furniture. Keep the screen comfortable to look at without tilting your head; a small room does not automatically require a small TV.
What about a living room or home theater?
Start with the main seat, then consider side seats, reflections, and walking space. If you prefer a less dominant picture, compare the 30° column. For a more immersive setup, try the 40° position. Mark the proposed screen outline on the wall before committing.
What matters for gaming?
You should be able to read interface text and follow action near the edges without uncomfortable head movement. Match resolution and refresh rate to your console or computer's actual output, and check input lag separately. Is there a minimum room size?
There is no single minimum room length or width determined by screen diagonal. Allow for the seat, screen or stand depth, access routes, and model-specific ventilation. Viewing distance is the eye-to-screen measurement; it is not the full room length.
